Egypt’s Nouran sets up last eight showdown with Nicol.
PETALING JAYA: Nicol David has a date with Egyptian world No. 5 Nouran Gohar in the quarter-finals of the Women’s World Squash Championship.
On Sunday, the 19-year-old Nouran showed sheer power to beat compatriot Nour El Tayeb 11-8, 12-10, 11-9 in the second round in El Gouna.
The 33-year-old Nicol had earlier booked her spot by beating Hong Kong’s Annie Au 12-10, 11-4, 13-11.
The last time Nicol met Nouran was in the semi-finals of the Hong Kong Open last year. Then, world junior champion Nouran won 11-9, 11-7, 11-13, 11-9.
Nouran believes it will be another close encounter.
“Nicol’s a legend and also my idol. It’s going to be Meanwhile, British Open champion Laura Massaro checked into the quarter-finals after beating New Zealand’s Joelle King 11-7, 11-8, 5-11, 13-11. The 2013 world champion next meets either home favourite Raneem El Welily or American Olivia Blatchford for a place in the semi-finals.
